Day 26 Completo

Day 26 Completo

June 26, 2017
Vatican

My hotel is 1000 feet from the Vatican St Peters Square. I wait until 9:30 am then check out and put Blum backpack in baggage storage.

With my credentials and passport in hand I head to the. Vatican. St. Peter's square is busy. I go through security and provide my credentials. Ten minutes go by and then the security comes back with the testimonium. It's a
Black ink on a tracing vellum. It has a gold
Fool incorporated into the testimonium as an anti fraud element.

I smile. It's done. I made it against all the odds. I still can't fathom that I took 2 million step and walked over 1,000 miles. It's too much for me to grasp.l

Completo.

Day 25 Lost in Rome

Day 25

June 25, 2017
Monterotondo To Monte Sacro
Statistics: steps= 31,303
Elevation climbed= 870 feet
Distance walked = 15.1. miles or 24.0 km.

I wake up early and spend the early morning completing some blog posts.i promised the nun who runs this Convent that I would go to 730am mass at the church .the accommodations are very nice and the dining area has a coffee vending machine which I use. At least 3 times this morning. Yum yum.

L head out a little early and when I reach the church the nun asks me if I was planning on going to mass at the Vatican. That sounds great. I head off to the Vatican.

The guidebok routes me to the river than all the way to a park then back to the river than the Vatican. Sounds simple but I get so lost twice that I over shoot the end of the map twice.

I end up meeting two Portuguese flight attendants for Ryan air and they lead me back to my map boundary. I finally reach the Vatican but the offices are closed today.

I go to my hotel and then go out to a bar to celebrate with 3 gin and tonics. Tomorrow I will go to the testimonium office.

So many thoughts going through my head. I made it. Sleep.

Day 24 The Sheep

Day 24 The Sheep

June 24, 2017
Monterotondo To Monte Sacro
Statistics: steps= 31,303
Elevation climbed= 870 feet
Distance walked = 15.1. miles or 24.0 km.

I was under the impression that I would be walking in suburbia and urban Rome today, but that's not the case. It's rural wheat fields. Bone dry. And the hottest day so far in the Mid 90s. I am packing 3 liters but my thirst could drink half at a time.

A steep descent from Monterotondo.the houses end quickly and it's dry wheat as far as the eye can see. Yikes!

The only sign is a piece of refuse wood with Francesco and an arrow scratched into the wood. And it's in the ground. It's like a no mans land.

Walk at least 5 kilometers in the open hot sun until the path has trees on each side. Cross a bridge and I check if the water is good for sitting in to cool off. Nope.

I keep tellIng myself one foot in front of the other. I see a large herd of sheep blocking the road ahead of me. There's two gypsies doing shearing or something to the sheep. I motion to the big man if I should just walk through the herd. He motions yes. I walk through the herd and like Moses they grudgingly provide just enough room for me to pass. Behind me they close the gap.

As I walk away it occurs to me how remote I am. I hustle EWup the hill dragging my right leg. At the top I take my Parkinson's medicines and walk fast.

The road continues on for another couple of kilometers then I see my first sidewalk and shortly thereafter my first gelateria. Yay!!

I walk to the B&B and they are full. The owner gives me a ride to the Santa Maria convento.

I sleep well.

Day 23 Personal Best

Day 23  Personal Best

June 23, 2017
Monteleone Sabrino To Monterotondo
Statistics: steps=76,574
Elevation climbed=3060 feet
Distance walked =36.1 miles or 58.2 km

I leave at 5:00 am. I think the 2 Austrians are sleeping. The B&B is 5-6 km on the path. So today's path is that much shorter. As I leave the town I come across my first Roman Amphitheater ruins.

Another hour or so and I reach Paggio Moiano another hilltop town. They are all charming. It's hot at 930am. In the morning. By 11:00am I have already completed the day's walk to Ponticello.

As I walk through the town, a shop lady waves me to her grocery store. She wants to sit and talk story. Sounds like fun to me. I buyx some soda and a croissant. I ask her if there's any place to stay in this small town. She says the only place to stay is 15 km more. Wow it's at least 92 degrees. Well better get going. The walk to Ponticello was mainly flat but after Ponticello, it's rolling hills...very steep hills walking though olive groves. Every chance I buy more water or soda. By the end of the day I drink at least 12 liters.

The hills may be small but many are very steep. My shirt goes from bone dry to soaked many times through the day. I look for a stream to jump in or even a water fountain but they are junk either too shallow, too mossy green or too many bugs.

I finally reach the hotel a town 15 km and the manager looks at me and shakes her head left to right. To say not here… oh well time to move on.

The path continues to be up and down, up and down. I keep drinking all day. When I finally reach Monterotondo I am nearing the wall of exhaustion. On the way to the hotel, I buy some groceries. My pack is now loaded to the gills. Food is practically falling out.

I reach the B&B but they are full. The next hotel is another kilometer. When I reach the room, I take a shower with my clothes on. It seemed like a good idea. Wash me and my clothes. I fall out of the room  and eat at the hotels restaurant.

I did a personal best- 58.2 km. My triathlon coach (jeff s.) always said finish strong. Today, I did finish strong. I still have two days of waking but it feels great to have such a strong day after weeks of walking.

Best of all I feel really good the day after.  Tomorrow,  I will see Rome for the first time on this walk.

Day 22 Monte who?

Day 22

Reiti To Monteleone Sabrino
June 22, 2017
Statistics: steps: 56,890 distance: 27.3 miles or 41.99 Km climbed:1,930

Countdown: 4 days and 87 Km to Rome

I guess those beers made me sleep well, I wake up late

at 5:15am which  is usually when I leave. On the way out of town I run into Margo and Corinne talking to two women. I discover they are both from Seattle. We walk for a kilometer or two. They walk a little slower so I walk ahead and quickly  lose sight of them.

Todays walk is suprisingly flat and fast.  My accommodations are a couple kilometers out of town. I see the turn off to Montenero which is a steep climb. It takes me an hour to reach Montenero. Which doesn't seem right but I am here and the castle is pretty cool. I go to the alimentari which is also a bar and I have two gin and tonics. Nice thing about Italy is gin and tonics are $2.50. Eat some pizza.

I show the local I have been talking the address of my B&B and he says "that's Monteleone, this is Montenero" Oh boy my dyslexia got the better of me. Monteleone is 15-20 km on the other side of the mountain I just climbed. And there's no bus... time to start walking.

After another hour of walking I stop at another bar and have two more gin and tonics and sandwich. And walk another hour and half to another bar. No I didn't drink more gin & tonics! I ask a local where this B&B is and he says he will give me a ride.

it takes about 10 minutes to reach the B&B. Lo and behold, two of the Austrians are staying there too!

I am pretty exhausted. I get an interviewed for a regional Facebook page with 6600 followers . I then go to sleep.

Day 21 Reiti

Day 21 Rieti

Puggio Bustone to Rieti
June 21z, 2017
statistics: steps: 42,557 distance: 20.47 milesmiles/ 41.9 km, Climbed:1,420
Countdown: 5 days and 109 km to Rome

Right off the bat, the walk begins dropping in altitude quiet a bit. The more I walk the more I don't like descending. My knees don't like it and it makes me uncomfortable. First thing in the morning is a real eye opener.

The walk stays at the same altitude for an hour and change. It's a walking path used by locals. After 3 hours I enter Cantalice, a medieval town on the side of a hill. Medieval towns are challenging to walk through. Lots of steep slopes and steps. Even if you can walk well, the irregular stair tread heights make it easy to trip. Remarkable no bad falls in over a million steps. Knock on wood.

Once through Cantalice, it's a nice easy walk. Hot but nice.

I was expecting Reiti to be similar to Assisi but that wasn't the case. Reiti is a modern city and very average in it's  appearance.

I run into The 4 Austrians. I have two Falls on the same set of stairs but catch my fall with my right hand both times. Whew close call.

Eat some pizza and drink two beers. Good sleep tonite!

Day 20 The 800 year old Beech Tree

Day 20 The 800 year old Beech Tree

Piediluco to Puggio Bustone
June 20, 2017
statistics: steps:52,381 distance: 24.7 miles
miles/ 40.0 km, Climbed: 3,430

Countdown: 6 days and 127 kilometers to
Rome

A nice flat wall along the lake then into the forest after an hour of walking. The medieval hilltop town of Labros comes into view. And that's a pretty steep hill. I could definitely enjoy just looking at Labros and not having to walk up. Oh well we're going straight up. It's quite a climb to get to Labros. . It is a charming medieval town with narrow streets. The path takes you through the village. Then all the sudden there's a modern room that is a Wi-Fi hotspot for the village. It is such a contrast to the medieval Village. Of course I love it. I stop and logon you get my email and senda few emails.

The rest of the day climbing, more climbing and more climbing. The climax Is watching an old beech that Francisco took refuge under during a storm. That would make the tree at least 800 years old!! It's a nice tree. Then proceed to the small chapel probably seats 15 people max.

Now just another 7-8 km to finish this walk. I'm almost to the town and I run into two Germans, a mother and daughter, Corinne and Margo. Corinne speaks excellent English. We walk into town and go to the pharmacy together and then to the bar for a drink. There are literally the third and fourth pilgrims I've seen on this route. I literally walk every day and see no one. The stay at the same ostello. I head up to the church. Interesting monastery and church. This is the location that francisco stayed in the mountains for a long time. There are some caves that they stayed in. I start to walk up until I realize the caves are miles away.

I return to have dinner with Corinne and Margo and four Austrians. We all return to the hostel. Before we retire Corinne hands us what looks like a fortune but it's a saying for you for the Camino. Turns out Margo made these.

Day 19 Artificial Waterfall

Arrone to Piediluco

June 19, 2017
Statistics: steps:28,906, distance: 13.63 miles/11 km, Climbed: 740

Countdown: 8 days and 149 miles to Rome

Today's walk is easy with one climb over a ridge line with an artificial waterfall. The first 2 hours are super flat then it quickly ascends to the fake waterfall built over a 2300
years ago in 271 b.c. By no other than the Romans. They built this massive waterfall 2300 years ago-that is
So hard to fathom! Incredible.

The top of the waterfall has a very nice park with water turbine parts laid out like a sculpture park. The water turbine parts are beautifully crafted. Definitely with checking out.

The path continues alongside a 3 kilometr artificial river. Walking along water is always nice. I walk to the center of Piediluco and wait an hour for the church to open the hosted but to no avail. So I walk back to Hotel Lago.

Eat dinner and call it a night,

Spoleto to Arrone (by train)
Walking statistics: steps:13,969, distance: 6.6 miles/11 km, Climbed: 350

Have to be in Rome by 26 of June. Which meant I had to do two stages or take a train. Since my right knee has been hurting me for past couple of days. I decided to take the train today give my knee a rest.

Very peaceful and quiet day. Woke up and took the train and then a bus. Arrived in Arrone by 10 AM. Spent most of the day writing.

Eat dinner and call it a night,

Day 17: Wonderful Spoleto

Day 17: Wonderful Spoleto

Trevi to Spoleto
June 17, 2017

Statistics: Steps: 39,583, Distance: 18.84 miles/ l28.0km, Climbed 780

I really like Trevi. It's not a big town but it's very charming. I splurged and stayed in a hotel for $50. I highly recommend Alla Rocca. checked out last night at the hotel, but didn't get passport. The front desk opens at 7:15am, which means 2:15 of walking in the sun. I sleep another hour then play with the internet until I finally get passport then I hurry out of town to make Up some time. The path goes up and down for an hour with scenic vistas through olive orchards as far as the eye can see.

It goes on for another 7-9 km and then goes on the flat for miles but it feels like I did two twice the distance on the flat pavements. The landscape is a mish mash of commercial and occasional roadside bar or restaurant bar. It's as flat as a lake but it takes all day to finish. And the last 2 hours is walking on the Road.

Its close to noon and I am thirsty and there's a Conrad Supermarket close by. I buy two fruit juices (1 liter each) 2 liters of Fanta orange, yogurt and shampoo. I check my gps and There's a hostel 200 meters away. I am lucky today :)

I check in and clean up. Time to check out Spoleto and the Lippi frescoes. I head into the centro. The first piazza has an old church but there's a funeral at the moment. I ask the hearse driver which church had the Lippi frescoes. He points on the map to the church at the top of the hill. it takes me an hour and when I get to the church there's a wedding happening. As the wedding ends the waiting tourists invade the church.there is one Lippi resco at the front of the church. It's pretty amazing. The other interesting item in the video church is a letter from St. Francis, it's one of two letters, known to survive from St. Francis.

I start heading back. Unfortunately my My medicine has run out. So I hobble back. I really like this place.

Day 16 The Perfect Hilltown

The Perfect Hilltown

Day 16
Assisi to Spello to Trevi

Walking statistics: steps:55,779, distance: 18.8 miles/30.1 km, Climbed: 2,360

This is the first city that I visited on this trip where I feel I didn't see much of the city. Assisi has much more to offer. I must return on a future trip.

The path climbs and then it goes along the mountain shoulder and down to the flats. The first town walk Through is Spello. I walk down Main Street which has many wine tasting shops. It's a charming town on a slope. There's Roman structures like the Roma portal at the bottom of town. Seemsy

I walk overs aomqlike a town you could spend half a day and be satisifIed that you saw it all. I stop at the bottom of the town and eat two slices of margherita pizza which wasn't that good but was filling. Next door is a Gelteria that makes the gelatkk themselves. I order my usual Amarena and I am happy. It takes great. I finished the first of two days of walking in good time now to finish strong in Trevi.

The path to Trevi is long and flat with the first half through the city and the second half through bone dry olive orchards. Good news I walk by my first Decathlon store on my walking route. Sad I need nothing so I keep Iwalking.

Good visibility Today. I can see the hilltop of Trevi from15 km away.i keep walking finally reaching the end of suburbia and the beginning of olive tree agricultural lands. To me olive tRees are quintessential Italy.

It's hot and dusty, some signs look like they got so hot they burned. I run out of water and my internal countdown clock starts to countiNg down To the danger zoom. Luckily a water fountain next to a church is I decide pmogutworking. I fill the bottle 3-4 times and just pour the water on my head. Then I drink a bottle of water and refill for the rest of the hike.

I make my way to Trevi and climb the last bit to enter on the entry road. The entry to he city is a wide tree boulevard. A nice shaday entry. I am very impressed

I decide to splurge tonight on a cheap room. The guide says Antica Dimors Alla R occa is a nice Place. It certainly is in a great central location. Just what the doctor ordered :) is

Walked to the bus stop. Bus to the train stop. See grafiti train. Take train to bus. Bus to another train. Train to train station. Train to another station. Then shuttle bus to AssisI. All that for about 10€ for 80 km. And I didn't miss a connection!

AssisI is an amazing town. Go to the 5pm pilgrims mass then a slice of pizza with Fanta orange soda and some gelato.

Then off to bed. Long walk tomorrow

Day 14 The Long Descent

Day 14 The Long Descent

Della Verna to Pieve Santo Stefano

Statistics: Steps: 37,011, Distance: 17.55 miles/ 28.0km, Climbed 1,560

After walking 42 km yesterday to Pastor Angelicus, my leg muscLes are really sore. More sore than anytime in the Past two weeks. I hobble up he impossible climb to la Verna chapels. It's a tough climb. The path continues to climb modesty for a couple of kilometers. Then is all downhill for the next 2 kilometers.

I notice some pain in area of the right knee and quads. Time to stop and see what's happenimg. There's no
sign of anything of anything wrong. No swelling. I massage by right thigh and doe some stretchs. Clive and Maya strike on to Pieve Santo Stefan. My Parkinson's
Medicone was taken hours ago and I should have taken another dose an hour ago. I take a dose now but it will take 45 minutes , in the mean time I will hobible down the path.

I follow the path until I see sign for my B&B. Then the crazy trail to the B&B. You really need a GPX file To find this B&B. I find it, but that's part luck and part skill.

We check in and then head to the centro to get some food. After a satisfy meal. Time to go to bed And try to catch up on these blog entries.

Day 13 The Deers

Day 13 The Deers

June 13, 2017
Stia to Della Verna

Statistics: Distance: 42.6 km/26.3 miles. Steps: 51,623
Climbing: 4,580

Up early and packed and out of the house by 4am. The plan is to do 3 days of walking in one day! It sstawrets with a climb of 10 kilometers. About 3 km into the hike I frighten two bIg deers and they both bolt away from the path. The path goes through a young forest until it reaches he summit then it turns into a forest of BEEch trees. I hear the.sound of water flowing, turns out to be a nice stream and its deep enough to sit in the water and cool off. I take a break,

After the 10 km climb - my energy is pretty tapped by the time I reach the Monastery of Eremo Camaldoli. The place is eerily quiet. Two pilgrims are resting near the entrance. The main building is being repaired with no talking. The monastery maintains a strict no talking even for the ciinstruction workers. Behind the main buildings is a small village of monks living a life of solitude.

I Hustle down to the end of the trail. There’s a cafe and I order a hamburger and French fries. The waitress is really busy, it takes forever. I start the second days trail late at 2 pm.

It immediately starts climbing going up five hundred meters over 2 kilometers. It's's a brutal climb. What little energy I had is completely gone now, it's apparent there's no way I'll be able to complete the 30s walk this afternoon.

The first day’s hike took me aeight hours. The second days hike takes me four hours. I've done the mileage and the climbing of three days in one day. IAustin losses Time to find a way to get to Verna. Time is running out it's 4 o'clock in the afternoon. There's one more bus in 45 minutes. I buy a bus ticket at the bar and a grande Italian beer.

The bus comes last bus to Verna leave The bus driver tells me that leaves before we get to it so I'll be stuck in the next city. After the bus driver drops everyone off then drivers me to the edge of town.
I start hitch hiking and I get picked up in five minutes by Andrea. He speaks English and he drives me right to The front door of the convent .

It is 7 o'clock The day.Is finally over.

Day 12 The Forest Hike

Day 12 - The Forest Walk

June 12, 2017
Consuma to Stia

Statistics : distance: 14.4 miles/ 23.04km , steps:30,663. elevation climbed: 1,160 feet weather: sunny 80.

After the initial climb, the walk from Consuma to Stia is mostly a forest hike through a 50 year-old forest with sparse views. The last 5 km is along a road on the valley bottom.

The hotel manager made us coffee and provided a sugar crust croissant. A nice kick start. The 30 Germans at dinner last night are nowhere to be seen.

We head our at 5:15am and immediately start climbing. It looks like most days start with climbs. We quickly enter a forest and stay under trees for most of the day.

Mostly two track trails and forestry roads. An ocassional tree harvesting using selective clearing. I count the tree rings and it's 50-65 rings or years old trees. Very few buildings.

Lots of ups and downs. We arrive in Stia by 10:30am. It's a very nice town. Nice people. Great central cafe with wifi.

Statistics : Distance: 14.7miles/ 23.04km , steps: 31,313. elevation climbed: 3,360 feet weather: sunny 80

Todays hike is through open wine orchards - of course with constant climbing. The day starts with a climb of 500 meters over the first 6 km to reach the charming little village of Diacceto. The bar is opens. it's part convenient store and part bar. I order a capaccino and some yogurt. Dynamite view and scenery.

Not too long after Diacceto the path enters the forest. Occassionly there's
a clearing but.mostly forrest. We run into tre two Danes near Consuma. They stayed in Diacceto last night.

We go to grocery store many times in Consuma. Eat well and sleep well.

Day 10 The Cammino Begins

June 10, 2017
Florence to Pontassieve

Statistics: Steps: 42,608 Distance: 19.88 miles/ 31.8 km
Climbed: 1,690

We leave the flat at 5:00 am and walk through the city of Florence heading towards the countryside. Block by block the landscape becomes more and more rural. It's so early that we see just a handful of people. We reach the beginning of the Cammino Francesco around 6:30am. There's a nice view of the city from here. 5 minutes later we reach a bar with gelato. It's 6:30am and I feel like a gelato. Yum yum, what a perfect way to start this walk. It hits the spot. It's up and down but very minor. After 12 km we react Ellera. There's a charming cafe with two very nice ladies working behind the counter. They make a great cappuccino.

Sigh, what a nice day walking through Italy. We finish the walking and Clive makes some delicious pesto pasta.

A very nice day.

Day 9 The Duomo

Day 9 - The Duomo

Florence
June 9, 2017

Clive heads out at 7am to do some sightseeing. I have some chores to do first then I head out. Buy a bus to Ticket at the bar. Head to the bus stop and jump on the
first going to the centro.i get oft at the train station and walk to the Duamo.

I wait in a line that will allow entry when it opens in 35 minutes. The outside of the church is truly impressive. The decoration is endless and Ornate. The inside of the church is simple and void of even normal decoration. I take some picture and I head on to the Basilica of the Holy Cross.

It turns out to Closed for lunch. It's complicated but they alsp Require thighs and shoulders to be covered. I head across the river for athe panarama views from Piazale Michelango. It's a decent climb but the Views are to die for at the top.

I head back to the Airbnb via the covered market bridge. All the bridge stores are high end brand jewelery stores. I catch the right bus and back at the flat in record time.

Just one more thing a nite gelato. Then is complete. Bed time.
